 2010 Student Poster Award

See the original call for SPA submissions here.

The Student Poster Award (SPA) has been offered for the last seven years at the SPSP annual conference. Three awards will be given out in each poster session -- one First Place award and two Runner-Up awards -- to students whose poster presentation reflects excellence in research, clarity in presentation, and personal knowledge in a discussion with the judges. Students who enter the competition will first have their poster and award submission statement reviewed by a panel of their peers, who will select five finalists in each poster session. These finalists will be interviewed by several secret judges during their poster session, and winners will be determined by the judges' scores. Award winners will receive a small monetary prize and public recognition for their achievement. First Place winners will also receive hardware and software, generously provided by Empirisoft.

Those who prefer to be involved in a different capacity are welcome to serve as peer reviewers and judges: see the call for reviewers and judges below.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COMPETITION PROCEDURES HAVE CHANGED FROM PREVIOUS YEARS' PROCEDURES -- READ CAREFULLY TO NOTE THE CHANGES

Eligibility

To be eligible for an award, applicants must:

  • Be the first author on an accepted poster submission
  • Be a full-time student (undergraduate or graduate) at the time of submission
  • Be a student member of SPSP
  • Be available to present their poster research at the SPSP conference
  • Present a poster that reflects the applicant's work, and not that of an advisor
  • Work must NOT be in-press or already published
  • Winners from past years are eligible to compete, but not winners from the most recent year (SPSP 2009)

SPA addendum from October 23, 2009:

  • You may compete for both the SPA and the GSC's other award, the Outstanding Research Award, in the same year, but you may only win one of the awards – therefore, you must submit a written notice of withdrawal from the SPA competition if you are a winner of the ORA competition.
  • Past winners of one award are eligible to apply for the other award the following year. For example, 2009 ORA winners may apply for the 2010 SPA competition.
  • If you have won an award in the past using specific studies/results, please submit different research for future competitions. Both the SPA and ORA seek to highlight fresh and novel developments in our field.

Students currently serving on the SPSP Graduate Student Committee are not eligible for an award.

Student members can apply for the award multiple times, with the exception that students who win the SPA are not eligible for consideration in the year following their award.

Judging Criteria

Finalists will be selected by peer reviewers who will consider the award submission statement and an electronic file showing the actual poster to be presented at the SPSP 2010 meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Peer reviewers will look for a concise statement of the research problem, a clear statement of methodology, appropriate data analysis, conclusions that are warranted by the data, an explanation of why the work is important, and a well-organized and clear presentation on the poster. Finalists and non-finalists will be notified by January 14, 2010.

At the 2010 conference, the five finalists in each poster session will be visited by several secret judges. During the conversation with the competitor, the judges are interested in the applicant's level of understanding of the research, ability to describe the work to non-experts and experts, and the degree to which the work represents the student's own intellectual effort. The visual organization and professional appeal of the poster may also factor into the judges' decision. All efforts will be made to inform the winners at the end of each poster session, and winners' names will be posted in a to-be-named location for the duration of the conference.

This Year's Award

We are pleased to announce that we will be awarding 7 First Place SPAs (one at each poster session). First-Place winners will be awarded the following:

  1. A $100 monetary award
  2. Free personal copies of MediaLab and/or DirectRT for the remainder of their graduate student career, plus one year post-graduation. The software can be used on up to two computers or laptops, and is provided courtesy of Empirisoft.
  3. The winner's choice of either: a DirectIN Millisecond Precision Keyboard (value $290) or a DirectIN Precision Response Box (value $390), provided courtesy of Empirisoft.
  4. The names of all First Place winners will also be published in a subsequent issue of Dialogue and in the FORUM.

We will also provide 14 Runners-Up SPAs (two at each poster session). Runner-Up winners will be awarded the following:

  1. A $50 monetary award
  2. The names of all Runner-Up award winners will also be published in a subsequent issue of Dialogue and in the FORUM.

Application and Award Process

Note: The deadline to apply for the 2010 award is Tuesday, December 1, 2009 (5 PM Pacific Standard Time).
**To our international colleagues -- if you are uncertain of how Pacific Standard Time relates to your own time zone, please use this site as a guide.** We regret that late submissions will not be considered.

ROUND ONE
If your first-authored poster has been accepted for the 2010 SPSP program and you meet the other criteria, you may then apply for a Student Poster Award by emailing these 3 files to the SPSP Graduate Student Committee at spspgsc@yahoo.com with the subject line "SPA."

FILE 1. In a separate Word document, include this information for administrative purposes (reviewers will be blind to your identity):

  1. full name
  2. affiliation
  3. year in school
  4. poster session (e.g., A, B, C...)
  5. full title of poster
  6. 3 to 5 keywords indicating topic area of poster
  7. a sentence acknowledging that you meet all the eligibility criteria listed above

FILE 2. Next, we need a 500-word award submission statement. The statement should NOT exceed 500 words and should include four separate sections describing the work on your poster:

  1. The problem or major purpose
  2. Procedure
  3. Results
  4. Conclusions

FILE 3. Finally, as this is a poster competition, we need a copy of your completed SPSP poster being considered for an award.

You must complete all 3 portions of the application process in order to be considered for a Student Poster Award. In other words, if you have not submitted the info sheet, a 500-word statement, and a copy of your poster by 5 PM PST on DECEMBER 1, 2009, your submission will not be considered by the reviewers.

ROUND TWO
Winners and non-winners of Round One will be informed by January 14, 2010. Further details will be given to the 35 finalists moving on to Round Two at that time.

Questions? Email the Student Poster Award Coordinator, GSC Past President Helen Lee Lin at hlin@uh.edu or spspgsc@yahoo.com.

Thank you for your interest. We received an overwhelming number of reviewer applications and are no longer accepting any more.

Call for Judges
See original call for judges here.

The Graduate Student Committee would like to invite faculty, post-docs, lab coordinators, and past Student Poster Award winners to volunteer as secret judges for the 2010 Student Poster Award (SPA), hosted by the Graduate Student Committee.

The service provided by our volunteer judges is critical to the success of the SPA! Your expertise is valuable to our applicants, who benefit from this opportunity to describe and discuss their research in detail with more advanced scholars.

The judging process is straightforward and requires minimal time and effort. Prior to the conference, judges will be given materials to help them (judging rubric, electronic files of their assigned posters). At the conference, the judges will utilize the judging rubric to evaluate their assigned posters and the presenter’s ability to explain the research. Near the conclusion of the poster session, the judges will reconvene with the SPA Coordinator (Helen Lee Lin) to tabulate the scores and discuss tiebreakers if necessary.

An ideal poster judge would be:

  • attending the conference in Las Vegas
  • available for one or two poster sessions (really only one session is necessary, but judges may volunteer for two sessions -- you specify which session(s) do and don't work for you)
  • willing to chat with 3-5 finalists about their poster
  • willing to score the finalists' poster and presentation on a scoring rubric
  • (importantly) able to visit and score his/her assigned posters in a timely fashion, so that scores can be tabulated and winners can be informed before the end of each session

If you are interested in volunteering as an SPA judge, please contact Helen Lee Lin at hlin@uh.edu with the following information in LIST FORM, in the body of the email:

(Refer to the poster schedule here for session letters and topics)

  1. Your name
  2. Current affiliation(s) and any other past affiliations that may create a conflict of interest
  3. 1 or 2 preferred sessions when you would be available -- use the session letters (e.g., A, B, C), and PLEASE double-check that you have written the correct letters
  4. Any sessions when you are absolutely not available
  5. A few keywords indicating your areas of expertise or interest
