Summer Institute in Social Psychology |
With National Science Foundation funding, SPSP is offering a two-week intensive summer school for up to 100 predoctoral students in social psychology. The Summer Institute in Social Psychology (SISP) is modeled after the highly successful summer school of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology (EAESP), and EAESP is a co-sponsor of SISP. Plans are to offer SISP in odd-numbered years, alternating with the EAESP summer school, which is offered in even-numbered years.
Costs
The fee for each student is $200, which covers tuition, housing in shared dorm-style rooms, and meals. Students are also responsible for their own travel to and from the SISP site. A limited number of scholarships (covering the $200 fee plus an additional amount toward travel expenses) will be awarded to students on the basis of financial need and academic merit.
Eligibility
There are three categories of eligible students:
- U.S./Canadian predoctoral students. Students enrolled in graduate programs in the U.S. and Canada, who are SPSP members and who have completed one to four years (inclusive) of graduate study at the time of application, are eligible to apply. (In other words, students enrolled in their second through fifth years of graduate study at the time of application are eligible.) Students studying social-psychological topics are eligible, whether they are enrolled in graduate programs within traditional psychology departments or in other academic areas (e.g., business schools).
- Predoctoral students from the EAESP countries. A limited number of students from the countries represented by the EAESP will be accepted. These students will be selected and offered partial financial support by the EAESP, under procedures that it will establish and publicize. Contact EAESP for further details.
- Predoctoral students from outside the U.S., Canada, and the EAESP area. A limited number of students from outside the U.S. and Canada, from countries other than the European countries represented by the EAESP, will also be accepted. Scholarship funds will be available to help with travel expenses for these students.
The criteria for selecting students are academic merit, promise as a researcher, and diversity (including gender, ethnicity, year in graduate school, area of interest, and particularly graduate departments -- that is, the committee will seek to admit students from different graduate programs). Finally, of course, another goal is to have roughly equal numbers of students in each of the courses.
