Stop bullying the social sciences, writes Timothy Wilson of the University of Virginia in the Los Angeles Times today. He discusses the challenges facing public perception of psychology and other social sciences, and points to research that has been critical to society. For example, in one study, social psychologists reduced the so-called "achievement gap" between African American and White middle school students by 40% -- using an intervention to help reduce how much African American students worry about how their performance will reflect on their group. Wilson spoke during the Presidential Address at the SPSP annual meeting in January about such intervention research in social psychology.
