Roxane Cohen Silver, a social
psychologist at the University of California, Irvine, talked on NPR's
Science Friday on Sep. 9 about the psychological effects of September 11. Her
research has looked at psychological responses to the the events of September
11, including how children have coped with the events and whether
people have been able to find any social benefits from the
attacks. One reported social benefit she and colleagues found in their research was increased philanthropy. "People gave
charitable donations, gave blood, and there was a coming together,”
Silver said. "People saw benefits in the support of their
communities and in the positive pro-social behaviors that they saw in
their neighbors and friends.” Read a transcript of the full interview with Silver and other mental health experts and
psychological science researchers on NPR.
