The leadership of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Inc. has had extended conversations regarding the actions of APA that led to the findings in the Hoffman Report. Although SPSP is a separate organization than APA, we recognize that the public perception of psychology is contingent on the reputation of APA. The collusion and unethical actions by individuals involved in APA governance violate the values of SPSP and the ethical standards of the field of psychology.

PRESIDENT’S UPDATE: I am writing to update SPSP members on the summer meeting of the SPSP Board of Directors, which was held on August 9-10 immediately following the APA convention in Toronto. Most of our time was spent on details involving the work of the various committees that oversee the convention, the convention program, student members, publications, awards, diversity and climate, fellows, training, and so on, along with topics related to the SPSP administration and budget. However, I want to mention two specific issues about which you may have questions.

The Foundation for Social and Personality Psychology, in collaboration with SAGE Publications, is pleased to announce the 2016 SAGE Young Scholars Awards. These awards recognize outstanding young researchers in personality and social psychology. Awardees will receive a one-time award of $5000 to be used at their discretion for research, study, or conference travel-related purposes. Five awards will be formally presented at the SPSP Annual Meeting in January to young scholars representative of the broad spectrum of personality and social psychology research areas. The America COMPETES Act reauthorization legislation – which passed the House earlier this year and targeted social science funding at NSF – is progressing in the Senate. The Senate’s Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has requested public input to guide the development of the Senate’s version of COMPETES.
