Subject: Free Text Analysis Software - RIOT Scan

I have received a few requests for an update on RIOT Scan from other SPSP members, so here is a brief update.

Firstly, the software is still available for free from http://riot.ryanb.cc

Here is a repost of the brief introduction:

There are currently multiple pieces of software available to the community for analyzing and scoring text files to provide meaningful information. Unfortunately, the cost for some of this software is a large barrier that prevents many people from undertaking research that might prove both interesting and fruitful. As such, I have undertaken a project to provide a basic, albeit useful, solution to this problem.

This is the current list of all content coding systems that RIOT Scan performs in addition to calculating some indices of variation of language. It can perform all of these systems either with or without stemming/lemmatisation.

  • "Being" and "Analogy" categories -- Martindale (really only useful for artistic writing)
  • Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW) system -- Bradley & Lang
  • Body Type system -- Wilson
  • Common Nouns -- Quintans
  • Dolch Sight Words -- Dolch
  • English Prime violations system -- Bourland
  • Financial Sentiment Dictionary -- Loughran & McDonald
  • Harvard IV-4 system -- Stone et al. This system is a pure prominence system, it does not include the weighting values of the original IV-4.
  • Lexicoder Sentiment Dictionary -- Young & Soroka
  • LIWC 2007 System -- Pennebaker et al.
  • Onomatopoeia words -- Boyd
  • Regressive Imagery system -- Martindale
  • Toronto Word Pool Norms -- Friendly et al.
  • Vowels / Consonants -- Boyd
  • Whirlall Words -- Inspired by Thomas & Duszynski
  • Whissell Dictionary of Affect in Language -- Whissell

Questions are always welcome, as are suggestions.

As a quick update, the ability to use your own custom dictionary files has been added. For more information on this (and an example), please visit the corresponding section on the RIOT Scan webpage:
