The Department of Psychology at UTSA would like to announce its new Doctoral program in Psychology. We are currently accepting applications for the 2013 cohort (Fall 2013 start). The program is designed as a post-Master’s program and students are expected to complete the program in three years. We provide students with rigorous training in statistics and methods, preparing them to be leading research professionals in the field of psychology. Special emphasis is placed on acquiring knowledge and research skills relating to the study of health and military health. We are particularly interested in recruiting students who have interests in applying research in social, cognitive, I/O, biological, developmental and other areas of psychology to health psychology and military health psychology. Our location in San Antonio, also nicknamed Military City USA, provides unique opportunities for research internships in such areas.
The interests of the faculty reflect our integrative approach to training students to conduct research on issues related to health and mental health among members of the military and their family. For example, ongoing research by faculty addresses PTSD, substance use, partner violence, health related risk taking, stress and coping, pain, anger management, emotional experience and regulation in the workplace, training for stressful environments, depression and suicide ideation, and measurement of these factors. Multiple faculty are currently conducting externally funded research, providing students opportunities for working on grant-funded projects. Students accepted unconditionally receive a funding package at a level comparable to other doctoral programs, including a combination of stipends, funding for research, and travel to conferences. Teaching and/or research assistantships are not required until the second year of the three year program.
